Update on Life/Work/ETC!

camera_waamu2

Well, I have been kicking myself for a long time to write another blog post. While I find myself listening to “Middle Cyclone” by Neko Case, I realize that’s the last thing I wrote about. (Still one of my favorites of the year so far!)

To date (since March) I have been up to….well… A LOT. I was hired as full-time staff at Northwestern University Advanced Media Production Studio (NUAMPS) in April, and have been working on all sorts of programs. In my absence from my website I have edited 5, directed 4, shot 3 programs for the Big 10 Network. These include programs on the Jazz Orchestra, 2 programs about the Waa Mu Show, Carmina Burana (Choral & Symphonic Piece –EPIC), Pines of Rome (Symphony), Symphonic Winds Ensemble, and the Chamber Orchestra! These along with various lectures, short piece about the new Research Cluster at Northwestern, and a lot of other things.

SO it has been busy and I am working on getting some new video up on some of these projects I have been working on. And I will be updating this blog more.

AC Newman Show

Last night I saw AC Newman at the Logan Square Auditorium. I am a fan, and the LSA is right down my street, and it was only 15 bucks. AC Newman, most notably known for his role in indie super-group “The New Pornographers” played a good show. His show was about right there with his music. Just good. I haven’t heard many bad things come out of AC’s mouth music wise, but aside from the New Pornographers, his solo stuff hasn’t had the same hootzpah.

I gotta say his new album “Get Guilty” seems to me like just a lesser re-iteration of 2004’s The Slow Wonder. The album is not bad by any means, but you gradually drift away from it. It doesn’t stick.

What I would recommend and what I cannot stop listening to is fellow Pornographer Neko Case’s new album, Middle Cyclone. I think it is my favorite album of the year so far. It comprises mainly of love songs, with strikingly beautiful lyrics, and equally beautiful melodies.  This album does not stop, It is great from start to finish. (Except the last track, which is 30 minutes of outdoor noises…).

Even in 2009, Blue is Boss.

“What should I have said? “Our pleasure, rooty-toot-toot”?” – Detective Andy Sipowicz

Sipowicz and Simone on NYPD Blue

So I have decided that I need to be more proactive about blogging in general. By that I mean I also have to have something substantial to write about. And by that I mean I have to start doing substantial things.

Somehow I don’t think watching what Andy Sipowicz and Bobby Simone are going to do on the next episode of NYPD Blue counts as substantial. (Although, I certainly wish it did. I am on Season 3 of the acclaimed ABC Drama, and I absolutely recommend it.) I know, I know what you are thinking. (What a putz!) But hear me out. Typically when confronted with a new television series, a main factor to determine whether I watch or not is the simple question, “Did my parents watch it?” If the answer is yes, then I pass.  But my roommate Mike convinced me well enough to watch the first episode, but I was still skeptical. So loaded it up….and 52 minutes later, I stood up, sighed and said….This is pretty awesome.

I wanted more.

So let that be a lesson to you. Your parents really are right some of the time.

Luckily now that I am employed I think my interesting things quotient is on the rise, so I would assume that I will have more to write about other then NYPD Blue. (12 seasons!)

I suppose we will see in the coming weeks.

Also absolutely key in my TV watching Habit includes my Classic Xbox, with XBMC installed.  Here is a tutorial on how to turn your useless old XBOX into your 2nd favorite electornic device (my laptop still wins)

Xbox Media Center.

Big news! Update on life at this point.

NUAMPS - Mark Skala

Basically since graduating I have been bumming around Chicago in search of a job, freelancing, doing what I can to pay my bills and live somewhat comfortably. Well I got a job at NUAMPS or more specifically Northwestern University Advanced Media Production Studio working as a video production specialist.

I have been there a little more than a week now and I have to say its pretty awesome! I just got done shooting and editing a piece that was shot on MLK Day. It was a concert featuring Mavis Staples of the Staples Singers. (Who I found out later was engaged to Bob Dylan for a time)  This week we have been shooting for the Law School for a series of video “discussions” in order to help incoming law students get acclimated to the program.

In the world of web design I’m currently working on a re-design of the Peace Memorial Church website, and also might have some new clients coming down the pipeline.  All I gotta do now is pay off my school loans!

I have returned to the Internet.

Hello! Chances are if you are reading this, you are either:

1. Looking at my work and deciding if you are going to contact me for an interview. (And yes! You should!).

or

2. You are interested in my life in some way, (sorry ;-) ), and want to know what I am doing these days.

Well to start I have recently graduated from Bradley University in Peoria with a BS in Multimedia. If you are interested in learning more about my qualifications and academic and professional history I shall say no more and direct you to my about page.

Since graduation I have moved from my parents house, in Oak Lawn IL, to the Logan Square neighborhood in Chicago. I have kept myself busy doing freelance work around the area (Further details as I get projects up here) including a documentary on a house build for the Community Restoration and Ecumenical Works organization, as well as a few web sites for some small business in the area.

I hope everything is going well for everyone, and I will be back with more information and projects as soon as I can.
